Catapult into the Future: Who We Were vs. Who We Are Now

Nestled on the banks of the Danube River in Hungary, Visegrád is a quaint town of less than 2,000 residents, yet it carries a weight of historical significance that resonates far beyond its small size. As I ventured there this summer, I was transported into a world that seemed untouched by time. Above the city stands The Citadel, a majestic castle dating back to 1009. Its ancient walls have witnessed centuries of turmoil and triumph, and now it stands as a beacon of national pride and resilience.

As I walked through the Citadel and contemplated its relics, like the pillory, it brought to mind the striking lyric from the song “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes”: “Don’t let the past remind us of what we are not now.” Often, we let our past selves, experiences, and routines define our future, creating a self-fulfilling prophecy that can trap us in our status quo. However, by embracing a mindset that leverages the past solely as a tool for learning rather than a shackle of who we used to be, we can create a future that exceeds our expectations, becoming much more than our past would ever allow us to be.

What if we assessed our past, unemotionally explored what worked and what did not, and used those learnings to help catapult us into a bigger and better future?

This mindset is especially crucial right now. As we head into September, many times a month focused on creating strategy, the following steps can help you and your team on the journey to the potential greatness that lies ahead.

Lessons to Take Forward
  • 1
Use the Past as a Guide, Not a Blueprint: Learn from past experiences and avoid letting them dictate your future. Apply the lessons learned, from successes and failures, to inform your direction forward and adapt to changing circumstances.
  • 2
Embrace Reflection and Learning: Find quiet time to reflect on what is important and what does not really deserve attention. Explore a diverse range of information from various sources to fuel new ideas for growth.
  • 3
Turn Adversity into Growth: View challenges as opportunities for innovation and development. We run faster when faced with a competitor. We need challenge and adversity to drive us forward in the best direction.
  • 4
Question and Innovate: Don’t settle for the status quo. Regularly evaluate and challenge existing practices to discover new opportunities and drive progress.
  • 5
Focus on the Future: Keep a forward-thinking mindset. Set clear goals, embrace new ideas, and continuously strive for improvement to shape a successful and fulfilling future.
